Mental Health Treatment: Then and Now In order to properly explore and answer the question that has been posed, the term mental illness must first be defined. Mental illness is the inability to properly control or express behaviors, emotions, or the personââ¬â¢s beliefs. This can affect any individual for any number of reasons. For instance, the illness may be contracted later in life due to stress, physical or even emotional damage. Treatment for these disorders today might seem practical, efficient and humane. This was not always the case for patients suffering from mental disorders. In the earliest forms, treatment for mental illnesses could be deemed barbaric, morbid and morally misguided. Patients who were admitted to mental institutions would be given shelter. This was an opportunity to observe the symptoms and to diagnose the problem that had been presented to the medical experts. Surely while being kept in these institutions the shelter that was provided to the patients were healthy and deemed acceptable right ? While deciding how to shelter these mentally ill patients, hospitals started to open mental wards. These wards would be considered the symbol of hope that the illness could be treated similar to other diseases or disorders that were confronted in the past. Him.â⬠I didnââ¬â¢t recognize my own voice. She rolled her eyes. ââ¬Å"Good grief, youââ¬â¢re annoying. Iââ¬â¢m started to see Isaiahââ¬â¢s point- you do need to suffer before dying.â⬠Turning away, she knelt down to the floor and flipped Mason over onto his back. ââ¬Å"Donââ¬â¢t touch him!â⬠I screamed. I shoved her with little effect. She shoved back, nearly knocking me over. It was all I could do to steady my feet and stay upright. Isaiah looked on with amused interest; then his gaze fell to the floor. Lissaââ¬â¢s chotki had fallen out of my coat pocket. He picked it up. It wonââ¬â¢t be very hard to- ââ¬Å" Suddenly, I heard an explosion. The aquarium burst apart as water shot out of it, shattering the glass. Pieces of it flew toward me, but I barely noticed. The water coalesced in the air, forming a lopsided sphere. It began to float. Toward Isaiah. I felt my jaw drop as I stared at it. He watched it too, more puzzled than scared. At least until it wrapped around his face and started suffocating him. Much like the bullets, suffocation wouldnââ¬â¢t kill him. But it could cause him a hell of a lot of discomfort. His hands flew to his face, desperately trying to ââ¬Å"pryâ⬠the water away. It was no use. His fingers simply slipped through. Elena forgot about Mason and jumped to her feet. ââ¬Å"What is it?â⬠she shrieked. She shook him in an equally useless effort to free him. ââ¬Å"Whatââ¬â¢s happening?â⬠Again, I didnââ¬â¢t feel. I acted. My hand closed around a large piece of glass from the broken aquarium. It was jagged and sharp, cutting into my hand. Sprinting forward, I plunged the shard into Isaiahââ¬â¢s chest, aiming for the heart Iââ¬â¢d worked so hard to find in practice. Isaiah emitted a strangled scream through the water and collapsed to the floor. His eyes rolled back in his head as he blacked out from the pain. Elena stared, as shocked as Iââ¬â¢d been when Isaiah had killed Mason. Isaiah wasnââ¬â¢t dead, of course, but he was temporarily down for the count. Her face clearly showed she hadnââ¬â¢t thought that was possible. The smart thing at that point would have been to run toward the door and the sunââ¬â¢s safety. Instead, I ran in the opposite direction, toward the fireplace. I grabbed one of the antique swords and turned back toward Elena. I didnââ¬â¢t have far to go, because sheââ¬â¢d recovered herself and was heading toward me. Snarling with rage, she tried to grab me. I had never trained with a sword, but I had been taught to fight with any makeshift weapon I could find. I used the sword to keep distance between us, my motions clumsy but effective for the time being. White fangs flashed in her mouth. ââ¬Å"I am going to make you- ââ¬Å" ââ¬Å"Suffer, pay, regret I was ever born?â⬠I suggested. I remembered fighting with my mom, how Iââ¬â¢d been on the defensive the whole time. That wouldnââ¬â¢t work this time. I had to attack. Jabbing forward, I tried to land a blow on Elena. No luck. She anticipated my every move. Suddenly, from behind her, Isaiah groaned as he started to come around. She glanced back, the smallest of motions that let me swipe the sword across her chest. It cut the fabric of her shirt and grazed the skin, but nothing more. Still, she flinched and looked down in panic. I think the glass going through Isaiahââ¬â¢s heart was still fresh in her mind. And that was what I really needed. I mustered all my strength, drew back, and swung. The swordââ¬â¢s blade hit the side of her neck, hard and deep. She gave a horrible, sickening cry, a shriek that made my skin crawl. She tried to move toward me. I pulled back and hit again. Her hands clutched at her throat, and her knees gave way. I struck and struck, the sword digging deeper into her neck each time. Cutting off someoneââ¬â¢s head was harder than Iââ¬â¢d thought it would be. The old, dull sword probably wasnââ¬â¢t helping. But finally, I gained enough sense to realize she wasnââ¬â¢t moving. Her head lay there, detached from her body, her dead eyes looking up at me as though she couldnââ¬â¢t believe what had happened. That made two of us. Someone was screaming, and for a surreal second, I thought it was still Elena. Then I lifted my eyes and looked across the room. Mia stood in the doorway, eyes bugging out and skin tinged green like she might throw up. Distantly, in the back of my mind, I realized she was the one whoââ¬â¢d made the aquarium explode. Water magic apparently wasnââ¬â¢t worthless after all. Still a bit shaken, Isaiah tried to rise to his feet. But I was on him before he could fully manage it. The sword sang out, wreaking blood and pain with each blow. I felt like an old pro now. Isaiah fell back to the floor. In my mind, I kept seeing him break Masonââ¬â¢s neck, and I hacked and hacked as hard as I could, as though striking fiercely enough might somehow banish the memory. ââ¬Å"Rose! She was right. He was dead. Very, very dead. I looked at the rest of the room. There was blood everywhere, but the horror of it didnââ¬â¢t really register with me. My world had slowed down, slowed down to two very simple tasks. Kill the Strigoi. Protect Mason. I couldnââ¬â¢t process anything else. ââ¬Å"Rose,â⬠whispered Mia. They were threats, threats I had to keep Mason safe from. These resources could be exchanged for technology and other goods which would assist Russia in becoming an industrialized country. Mary Wollstonecraft was not only a figure during the Enlightenment, but one of the famous pioneers for the feminist cause. She would inspire women during the 18th century as well as women of the future with her novels such as The Vindication of the Rights of Women and The Vindication of the Rights of Man. She was a true believer that education for women would not only allow women to develop as humans but also to be independent from men. In a time where women were subordinate to men, Mary stood for her beliefs and preached for equality. Thus, Wollstonecraft's beliefs in equality for women would shape the future for women of the world. Mary Wollstonecraft was born on April 27th 1759 in London to an abusive, squandering father, Edward Wollstonecraft, and Elizabeth Dixon. The second of seven children, she and her family would frequently move. But in Yorkshire she meets clergyman Mr. Clare, which whom she starts to develop intellectually. She would go on to be a lady's maid, governess, teacher, translator, and writer throughout her life. She longed to live an independent life, but struggled to earn a living wage with the jobs she had and the fact she lived in a world where women were to become obedient wives. Mary's sister, Eliza, was supposedly deranged from her difficult birth to her daughter and the abuse of her husband. So, Mary convinced Eliza to leave her husband and baby. The sisters would then start a school with Mary's beloved friend, Fanny Blood. When Fanny dies in Mary's arms from complications during child birth, Mary returns to the school to find that it suffered during her absence with Fanny. Mary then closes the school and writes Thoughts on the Education of Daughters. She then goes on to become a... ...available to everyone. Mary Wollstonecraft achieved much in her life, but most importantly she inspired other women to be independent and to improve their lives. Mary lived a life a scandal during her time. Not only did she have children out of wedlock, but she was firm in her belief that she did not need to dedicate her life to another man just because it was the social norm. She was an advocate for education and equality because of the hardships she experienced in her life struggling to survive. Mary Wollstonecraft's achievements of inspiring women during her time and of the future as well as her support of education for women to grow not only intellectually but independently make her an inspiring figure during the Enlightenment. Thus, Mary Wollstonecraft's contribution to the Enlightenment was radical and inspiring to future generations of women.

A Conflicted Society Essay
à à à à à à à à à à In the novel ââ¬Å"Things Fall Apartâ⬠, Chinua Achebe challenges the reader to actively engage in the analysis of issues raised throughout the text. Achebe brings the issue of tradition versus change to the forefront of Umuofian society for the reader to examine. Achebe shows the reader the gradual downfall of the main character, Okonkwo, through his refusal to accept change in his society. Achebe also brings about the controversial issues dealing with masculinity in Umuofian society. Okonkwo rejects anything that he feels is ââ¬Å"womanlyâ⬠and thus seals his own demise. Achebe shows the reader that acting ââ¬Å"manlyâ⬠doesnââ¬â¢t necessarily make one a man. By simplifying the issues within Umuofian society and the conflicted Okonkwo, Achebe paints a clear picture of the consequences of closed-minded societies, and the people who exist within those societies. Okonkwo and his Umuofian society are strong believers in tradition, and continually ignore the need for change throughout the novel. In a deal with a neighboring village, Okonkwo becomes the illegitimate father to a boy named Ikemefuna. Over time, Okonkwo comes to accept the boy, finding him to be an ideal son. While Okonkwo is fond of the boy, he never shows any affection toward Ikemefuna. After three years of living with Okonkwo and his family in Umuofia, Ikemefuna is murdered by the man that he treated as his father and other men in the village simply because the ââ¬Å"Oracleâ⬠told a village elder that the boy must die. Rather than challenge what his society is doing, Okonkwo goes along with his clansmen and takes part in the death of Ikemefuna. In his dying moments, Ikemefuna runs to Okonkwo for protection, but Okonkwo kills Ikemefuna because he refuses to question the ideals of his fellow villagers, and does not want to appear weak. After Okonkwo is exiled from Umuofia for accidentally killing another young man in the village, the reader still sees a reluctance to embrace change in society. Now living in his motherland, Mbanto, Okonkwo and his family are met with missionaries that have travelled to the village to share Christian beliefs with the villagers. The missionaries preach about the danger of worshipping false gods. The villagers reject the missionariesââ¬â¢ beliefs, simply because it is not what their fathers and grandfathers believed. The people of Mbanta cling to their pagan religion with complete closed-mindedness, rejecting the Holy Trinity and any other beliefs that differ from the traditional beliefs of their ancestors. Reverend James Smith, who is the leader of the missionaries, has his church burned to the ground because one of the villagers who converted to Christianity unmasked an egwugwu during a pagan ceremony, which the villagers believe to be the same as killing an ancestral spirit. Rather than be open-minded to other religions and beliefs, the villagers reject anything that is not what they are used to believing. They burn down Reverent Smithââ¬â¢s church to get rid of the villagers, and the new ideas that they preached. Okonkwo is not accepting at all of anything that seems feminine to him.à Okonkwo sets very strict boundaries with his daughter, Ezinma, simply because she is female. Even though it is his daughter, Ezinma, that knows her father the best, and that Okonkwo feels closest to, he keeps her at arms length. The feelings that Okonkwo has for his daughter are illustrated in the passage that states, ââ¬Å"Okonkwo was very lucky in his daughters. He never stopped regretting that Ezinma was a girl (Achebe 172)â⬠. Because Ezinma was a girl, even though she probably understood her father the best of any of his children, he pushed her away and avoided a close, loving relationship with her simply because of her gender. By pushing away Ezinma, Okonkwo is passing by a great opportunity to get to know his daughter and have a closer relationship with her. Simply because she is a female, he rebuffs her attempts to have such a relationship with her father. Another example of Okonkwoââ¬â¢s intolerance for ââ¬Å"womanlyâ⬠things is within his relationship with his son, Nwoye. Nwoye decides that he is going to go against his fatherââ¬â¢s wishes, and join the missionaries. Upon learning of Nwoyeââ¬â¢s decision, Okonkwo sits down with his sons and tells them that, ââ¬Å"I will only have a son who is a man, who will hold his head up among my people. If any one of you prefers to be a woman let him follow Nwoye now while I am alive so that I can curse him (Achebe 172)â⬠. Okonkwo would rather drive away his own flesh and blood than to have them be who they really are, and accepting them for all that they are, and all that they arenââ¬â¢t. By pushing away his son simply because his aspirations differ from those that Okonkwo would have for him, Okonkwo is creating a very large crack in the foundation of his family. Once a child is told that his father isnââ¬â¢t proud of him, it is very difficult to rebuild any relationship. Okonkwo would rather maintain a ââ¬Å"manlyâ⬠appearance than accept his family for who they are. Chinua Achebeââ¬â¢s novel, ââ¬Å"Things Fall Apartâ⬠addresses the always controversial issue of tradition versus change, and shows his readers how a failure to be open-minded and accepting of new ideas can lead a one into a vicious cycle of making mistakes. Achebe also addresses the issue of masculinity versus femininity in the novel. Through the actions of his main character, Okonkwo, the reader realizes that simply because a man is ââ¬Å"toughâ⬠does not necessarily mean that he is a good, respectable man, even if he is highly regarded within his own society. Achebeââ¬â¢s novel brings these issues that exist within African society, and allows the reader to see the consequences of rejecting change through the absolute demise of the main character of the story, Okonkwo, and the subsequent effects of rejecting new ideas and beliefs on society in general. Henry Lee Lucas Essay
Henry Lee Lucas On July 11th 1983, a drifter named Henry Lee Lucas was arrested for illegal possession of a fire arm by a felon. Lucas was not at all happy about being locked up, because they were supposedly depriving him of cigarettes and coffee. After being locked up for 4 days, he admitted to one of the jailers that he had ââ¬Å"done some bad thingsâ⬠. He told that he had killed for the last 10 years. He was already a suspect in 2 murders, and the offices were sure that they would soon have enough information to close these 2 cases. Lucas admitted that he had killed Kate Rich and Becky Powell. While in court for these murders, he admitted that heââ¬â¢d had sex with the body, cut it into pieces and burned it in a wood stove. He also said that he had killed at least a hundred more. Police started questioning Lucas about other unsolved murders all over the country. He would admit to them and tell them some details about the crime that would link him to it. Over a period of time, he started offering more information about murders that he had not even been questioned about. He said that he usually picked up hitchhikers then he would quickly kill them and have sex with the body because he preferred sexual contact with a corpse. He generally used a knife or strangulation, but said that he liked to try different methods so that he didnââ¬â¢t leave a pattern for the police to follow. Lucas also later confessed to killing his mother. He said that she was an alcoholic and was mean to him. Some claims say that she supported the family by bootlegging and prostitution. Lucas claimed that his mother made him watch her entertain her clients. He claims that after walking out of the room one time because he was disgusted with her actions, she found him and hit him in the head with a wooden board. He said that after that, he had dizzy spells and headaches. On January 11, 1960, Lucas and his mother got into an argument and Lucas grabbed a knife and plunged it into her neck. He was convicted of second degree murder and sentenced to 20 years. He served 10. Another claim that he made was that of one of his motherââ¬â¢s clients. He said that this man turned him on to bestiality by showing him how to have sex with the corpse of a dog or sheep. He said that he first killed someone just before he turned 15. He said that the reason was so that he could see what it felt like to have sex with a human. Lucas had a traveling companion/lover named Odis Toole. Toole supposedly assisted Lucas in these heinous crimes. Tooleââ¬â¢s niece, Becky Powell, began to travel with them. Lucas began to fall in love with her. He decided to take Becky for himself, so he and Becky left Toole and went to TX. Toole was not happy about them leaving. He had lost his longtime lover and his niece. He supposedly killed several people over a 6 month period of time. He also confessed to kidnapping and killing a small boy named, Adam Walsh. Adamââ¬â¢s father was inspired after the killing of his son, to start the popular show, Americaââ¬â¢s Most Wanted. After living in TX for a while, Becky wanted to come home. Lucas resisted, but later told her to gather her things. They began to hitchhike. He continued trying to get her to change her mind. She did not. At one point, they got into an argument and she slapped him. He took his knife and stabbed her in the heart. He drug her off over and embankment and had sex with her corpse. He cut her up into 9 pieces and spread them over a field. He later returned and gathered the pieces and buried them under a tree. He then returned to where they were living in TX, and to a lady named Kate Rich. He wanted to kill again. He asked Kate if she wanted to help him look for Becky (knowing that she was dead). She agreed and went with him. He drove to the end of a dirt road and stabbed Kate in the side, puncturing her heart. He was immediately aroused. He dragged her from the car and had sex with her body. He cut her up, also, and took her back to where they were living in TX and put her in a stove to burn her remains. After much investigation, and examination of the times and places that some of the murders took place that Lucas had admitted to , police began to question whether or not he was telling the truth. They later figured out that he was lying about several of the instances, because some of them were even committed when he was locked up for other crimes that he had committed. It was also found that he was known to be in a different place when he claimed to have killed in another state many miles away. Lucas claimed to have committed over 360 murders. It was eventually claimed that the police were so interested in closing some of their open murder cases that they would show Lucas the case files to ââ¬Å"refresh his memoryâ⬠. He in turn used it to his benefit by tying himself to the murders by telling evidence that was never released to the public. The police actually cleared around 213 cases through Lucasââ¬â¢ confessions. He was convicted of only 11 homicides; although some criminologist say that he was responsible for between 40-50 murders. In 1998, Gov. George W. Bush of TX commuted the death penalty that Lucas was handed, to a sentence of life.

Show how your strengths and experiences will enrich the student body and how youââ¬â¢ll engage with the campus and the surrounding community. Tell your story. The University of Denver explicitly say that they give a lot of weight to your essay, extracurriculars, and supplementary materials, and the admissions counselors are looking for bright, motivated students who will make the most of their education. Partner with recommenders. Most students choose a recommender and let the recommender do all the work, but you need to make sure that every piece of your application is strong. Choose recommenders who can complement your essay by highlighting a different aspect of your character, such as athletic coaches or work/volunteer supervisors. Give your recommenders all the help they need to make their letters flow with the rest of your application. Enhance the themes of your completed application. A seasoned admissions counselor will review your entire application in about nine minutes and evaluate it. If you want them to remember something positive about you, then youââ¬â¢ll need to mention it throughout your application, not just once and hope that they remember. Try this strategyââ¬âfinish your application at least a week early and leave it alone for a few days. When you return to it, read the whole application in nine minutes. What stood out to you? What wasnââ¬â¢t clear or could be improved on? Then make those improvements. The University of Denver receives applications from more qualified applicants than they can accept, and they work hard to make sure the DU is affordable for the students they admit. If you find yourself facing a no-thank-you at the end of the admissions process, donââ¬â¢t be too hard on yourself. Bright, motivated, resourceful students will find success, or create it, anywhere they go. The University of Denver doesnââ¬â¢t appear to have a formalized decision appeals process. However, we do not recommend that you petition your decision, as across most schools, decisions are rarely reversed. The Sykes-Picot Accord was declared on May 16, 1916. The accord was negotiated by the French diplomat Francois Georges-Picot and Briton Mark Sykes in November 1915. It was a secret agreement between the governments of France and Britain in defining their influence in the post-World War 1 and their control of the Middle East. The boundaries that were drawn in the accord still remain in the present border between Iraq and Syria.
